Self Drive
Many people ask if it is possible to do a self-drive safari to the camps and lodges in the Kalahari Summer promotion. The simple answer is yes, several camps and lodges can be reached by vehicle, however a four-wheel vehicle is required.
We do recommend that you familiarise yourself with all the requirements needed to take a vehicle out of South Africa / Namibia and into Botswana.
You can very easily drive to Maun from either South Africa (Johannesburg area) or Namibia (Windhoek) in any type of motor vehicle, the roads are all tarred (paved) and are generally well maintained. It is very important to note that we do NOT recommend that you travel at night in Botswana and rather suggest that you rather opt to overnight en-route.
We do have secure parking in Maun available, where you may leave your vehicle and then fly to respective camps and lodges with Delta Air.
Those guests who do own a four-wheel drive vehicle or intend to rent one can drive to several of the camps and lodges in the Kalahari Summer Promotion and make the journey part of the adventure.
The following Camps & Lodges can be reached with a four-wheel drive vehicle:
- Meno a Kwena (Makgadikgadi/ Nxai Pans area)
- Deception Valley Lodge (Central Kalahari)
- Grassland Bushman Lodge (Central Kalahari)
- Santawani & Sankuyo Bush Camp (Southern Okavango Delta)
- Any of our Fly Camps at either: Xakanaxa, Khwai, Savuti or Chobe Riverfront.
Experts do advise that you are very familiar with the four-wheel drive vehicle you intend to use. The use of a GPS is also advisable and proper route planning needs to be done. Following good four –wheel drive practice is not a luxury but a absolute prerequisite if you are going to enjoy the drive!
We look forward to welcoming you to our camps and lodges…. Enjoy your safari with Kalahari Summer.
