General Information

The Kalahari Basin (or Kalahari Depression) is a large lowland area covering over 2.5 million km. covering most of Botswana and parts of Namibia, South Africa, Angola and Zimbabwe. The outstanding physical feature in the basin is the large Kalahari Desert, taking up most of the area. The unusual feature of this massive desert is that it is defined as a desert due to the total lack of surface water and not as a result of low and erratic rainfall like true sandy deserts. What does this mean? – it is also a desert with many large animals.

The Kalahari Desert upon closer inspection reveals four distinct areas all very different from each other. In the east we find the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, The Central Kalahari lies to the south-west, the Okavango Delta at the center and the Chobe River Front region to the north.
